After being completely and utterly lazy yesterday on the writing front, doing nothing at all, all day long--except read for pleasure, run errands, and angst--I sat my ass in the chair today and finished the short story for the anthology I was invited to. Is it a good story? I have no clue. I'm going to let it sit awhile, then come back to it toward the end of the month. Also run it through my local crit group, and the OWW. But, being excited about finishing it, I went to check up on the invite I received by email . . . and I can't find it. It was either deleted because it sat in my inbox too long, or I "saved" it somewhere, in some folder, and now I've forgotten where. *sigh* I'll have to get in touch with the editor in charge and ask for a resend, which makes me look completely unprofessional, which I hate. *grrr* I already know it's a little longer than what was requested, but I figured it will need some serious rewrites anyway, so the final product should be good.

But the story is done. An actual short story. Written by me. That hasn't (yet) blown itself up into a full-fledged novel. I've only done that once or twice in my lifetime.

I also spent part of today procrastinating on finishing off the short story by cleaning and organizing and packing things in boxes. For those in the know, let's just say I moved a bunch of crap to the 4th floor. We'll see what happens. It's kind of sad that it took less than an hour. No promises on my front, but you guys know that story already.

And that's today. Gym coming up shortly.

I am hopeless at short stories. They either end up under 2000 words, or they're novellas.

I am a novel writer myself (in terms of length, not uniqueness) so I know how satisfying it can be to pack a whole story into a small package. Kind of makes you wished you smoked so you could have a cigarette, doesn't it?

You know, I forgot you were an OWW alum, too. I was a beta tester on the old Del Rey version of that site! In fact, one of my novels won the very first Editor's Choice for SF chapters (still not sold, although my agent tried). The first fantasy SF Editor's Choice was won by some guy named Jim Butcher. Wonder whatever happened to him? -)

Big, big congrats on finishing the story, espcially because it's a short story. "An actual short story. Written by me. That hasn't (yet) blown itself up into a full-fledged novel." This is me all over. I, too, finished a short story (in May) that wasn't clamouring to become longer and longer until it morphed into a novel. I was a little surprised, frankly.

*applause, applause* Good going!

Now, if only some of that would rub off on my long-winded self. Gah. :/

If you go to USA Today's website, they are running a design a Transformer contest. Just saying.

Hey, I should see you soon at the AP Reading. I'm planning on picking up a copy each of The Skewed Throne and The Cracked Throne and two copies of The Vacant Throne, each in paperback. A friend recently complained about a lack of female main characters in epic fantasy and I thought of you. The copy of the Skewed Throne is for her.

I'm at the AP Reading now. I should have copies of all of the books in the next day or two. I ordered them into a local bookstore and need to pick them up. Good to know that I won't be taking a few of them home myself. *grin*

And thanks for spreading the word about the books!
