So . . . today I spent a *bleep*-load of money. On a new TV. But, you see, I have no furniture! No TV! So the TV was a required necessity that I had to have.

However, the 4 box sets of various seasons of TV shows (Millenium Seasons 1 and 2; X-Files seasons 6 and 8) were probably not necessities. Probably. But they were on sale! Half off. You can't pass up half off. (BTW, the Millenium box sets were to replace ones that were stolen; the X-Files were sets I hadn't gotten around to buying yet.) I would have gotten 2 more box sets (X-Files seasons 5 and 7) except that the Best Buy I was in didn't have them in stock. I plan on stopping at the Best Buy on the way to Lock Haven tomorrow to see if they have them on sale and in stock, if I have time.

And lest you think I've gone off the fiscally responsible deep end, I must explain. This past week, I had an epiphany: I've been "living" with my partner for the last year and a half and at this point I have a few pieces of crackle integrated into his place . . . and that's about it. I don't even have a drawer. I've been renting the 4th floor since summer and while most of that time was spent painting, I decided my partner wasn't ready to have the 3rd floor be "our" space. So I'm taking over the 4th floor completely. I put it off hoping that things would be different, but I'm tired. Tired of living out of boxes and containers and storage units and luggage and laundry baskets. Part of the hesitation about moving into the 4th floor is that hope I mentioned earlier that's now died. Part of it was that I lost all of my heavy duty furniture in the flood (and the electronic essentials in the subsequent theft) so I don't really have much of anything to move into the 4th floor in the first place. Bringing myself to the point where I was willing to start forking over huge sums of cash to get the furniture essentials was a long process.

But I'm there now. I bought the TV. I have a few furniture things (some short bookcases, a hutch, some larger bookcases) already. I plan on buying multiple cheap bookcases next weekend, plus some antique furniture if it's still at the antique shop and they're willing to drop the price a little. (It's 1920s Art Deco stuff that's been in the shop for a while, so they should be willing to drop the price. Plus I want to take all 3 pieces.) Once I have that stuff, I can start taking things out of boxes and containers. I spent yesterday cleaning the kitchen, the stove, and the refrigerator. So this Friday I plan on putting down shelf liners and getting all of my kitchen stuff out of boxes. And once all of that is done, I'll feel like I've started moving in.

I have further furniture pieces to buy (starting from scratch in the furniture realm is hell on your finances BTW). I want at least 2 more sets of bookcases, since I'm using the bookcases as walls and dividers for the floor space. I want to buy a sleigh bed for the bedroom, but that will come much later, like summer. Right now, I want to get the basic "walls" into place, the kitchen set up, the games put away, and the TV set up. I'll work on this over the course of the semester, on weekends. That should drain my finances sufficiently I'll feel obligated to continue teaching. (Unless my fresh new agent gets me a few book contracts. *wink, wink*) Once summer hits I'll work on the bedroom area and, say, places to sit, and tables, and an entertainment center (with bookcases), and a desk to write at. Oh, and decent fans. Lighting I'll probably fit into the finances over the semester (I have an extremely cool antique chandelier already). And curtains. Or at least blinds.

Damn. I can see why you need to double the estimate when you hire someone to remodel a room or house.

Sounds like the right decision from where I sit. However I'm about to make a major move myself, so that kind of thing is near the forefront of my mind.

Good luck with the deal, Art Deco is very very nice.

although what I like best is helping other people spend money on themselves, then I get the pleasure of shopping without the bank strain - or having to deal with it all later

You need to get a nice, big table, with at least 3 chairs. Then we can come game at your place some times, too. :-)
