Oh, crap! What have I gotten myself into?

So today I finished chapter 4. Or rather, chapter 4 finished itself for me. You see, I had all these plans, a little rough draft of chapter 4, but along the way it was hijacked by 2 characters that I hadn't even planned on having in the book! Seriously. The first two scenes are what I planned, except that the first scene didn't end right (which is what I now blame the horrible writing day earlier this week on) and yesterday I changed it and once I did that everything in the chapter fell into place. These two characters took over after scene 2 and I pretty much totally lost control and just let them do what they wanted.
I think it's a strong chapter. Not as much action as I'd originally planned. In fact, no real action at all (no dagger fights or anything like that). However, you get the sense that the stakes have suddenly tripled. See, the new characters are people (we learn) that Varis shouldn't trust. However, she really NEEDS to trust them. So now there's this conflict of interest thingy going on, mixed in with some good old screwed up relationships, so the tensions in the chapter is rather high. Which makes me feel good. In an evil sort of way.
Writers really do torture their characters. It's the only way to go.
So, everything I had planned has now been totally revised for another perspective and has been shifted to chapter 5. I'm hoping this doesn't increase the length of the book. Wordage:
The Vacant Throne
PS--Thanks all you OWWers for welcoming me to the chat last night. I didn't participate as much as I hope to in the future because . . . well, I've feel like I need to hang around enough to get into the flow of things, get to know people, get some inside jokes, etc. Later!
