So, finally some cover art for The Cracked Throne that I can share! Here it is:

And here's the cover copy:

Publisher’s Weekly hailed THE SKEWED THRONE as an “intense fantasy debut . . . succeeds admirably . . . a heartfelt portrait . . .” While Locus called it “compelling reading.” And THE CRACKED THRONE, the second novel in this highly original fantasy trilogy, more than lives up to the promise of the first volume.

Fifteen hundred years ago, the legendary trading city of Amenkor faced a seemingly unstoppable threat that appeared out of nowhere to attack and destroy city after city along the Frigean coast. Only a masterful working of magic could turn back this devastating invasion. And so the Seven Adepts combined their power and knowledge to create the Skewed Throne. Since that time Amenkor had been ruled by the individual who held the Throne, and down through the centuries the city had prospered and that ancient threat had been all but forgotten.

Then, a millennium ago, Amenkor was caught in the White Fire, a mysterious force that swept across the land spreading madness, drought, famine, and disease in its wake. With the passing of that first Fire, the ruling Mistress of the era had been found dead on the steps leading up to the palace. And since that time the city had begun a slow, inexorable downward spiral.

Varis had learned the art of survival as a very young child in the slums of Amenkor. And when the mysterious White Fire swept through the city for the second time in a millennium, Varis had survived that as well. But she had been changed by the Fire’s spell, and she was not the only denizen of Amenkor marked by the White Fire. Eryn, Mistress of the Skewed Throne, had continued to reign over the city after the Fire’s passing. Yet from that moment, Amenkor’s decline had escalated, and Eryn herself seemed to hover on the edge of madness.

As Amenkor continued to deteriorate, Varis came to the attention of some of the most powerful people in the city, people who could see her unique potential. And she found herself transformed from gutterscum to unofficial Seeker to bodyguard to assassin. Yet none of her skills could save her from a destiny she would never have wished for or imagined.

After a confrontation that perhaps no one else could have survived, Varis became the new Mistress of the Skewed Throne. Untrained, unprepared, and not certain who she could trust, Varis took the Throne at the most perilous point in Amenkor’s long history. The city was on the brink of starvation, thanks to a fire that had destroyed most of the warehouse district, and the trading ships sent out to bring back the supplies needed to feed the city had disappeared without a trace. And both Varis and Eryn were obsessed with a vision only they had shared—a vision of Amenkor invaded by an unknown enemy, the harbor watch towers destroyed, wrecked ships sinking in waters stained red with blood, even as the city itself was engulfed in flames. . . .

I still haven't gotten my hands on pbray's The First Betrayal yet either. *taps foot and stares at B&N*

I get it! DAW has a new policy where they're only publishing books with blue-skinned characters on the covers!

Seriously, congrats. It's a great feeling.

So let's see ... judging by the artwork, this is some sort of western romance story, right? :-P

So you have blue-skinned characters, too? What's your reason?

It's actually a urban, literary, chick-lit novel. Couldn't you tell?

My goblins are blue. Just 'cause...

Chick-lit, of course. The woman in the green dress (you know, the one burning the souls from those poor guys) should have given that away.

Yeah, see, I said my people had blue skin just cuz and people looked at me strange. They wanted there to be a REASON they were blue. I said that was their race. The strange look didn't fade away in dawning comprehension.

I saw it. Thanks for the kind words. I'm always curious (too curious) about what people think of the book. I'm sure this is common amongst writers. *grin*

Very nice-- now, as has been said by others, all we have to do is wait for the book to go inside that image :)

Just from the coverart, I'd say Locus is right - it looks compelling! Rushing over to Amazon.com to reserve. :-)

That's a really beautiful and eye-catching piece of cover art. Whoever did that is really talented. Do you have any input when it comes to the cover art for your novels? Are you consulted in any way concerning what form/content it should take?

Date: 2006-05-20 10:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jpsorrow.livejournal.com
Most of the time, the author doesn't have any input on the cover. Sometimes, the editor will ask if they author has a suggestion. So far with my editor, she's asked what I thought, we discussed that idea and what she thought, and in the end came to some type of concensus of what we think would be cool. Then she contacts the artist (Steve Stone for both of my covers). He has his own input of course. Once he's got a concept, my editor adds some input, and then if they need to they come back to ask me questions. For Skewed Throne, there wasn't anything they asked me at the end. For Cracked Throne, they asked me TONS of stuff--details about the clothes, about the ships, about how the people would be standing, etc.
