tryslora for days now. I'm glad to see that she felt there was a distinction between when Varis, the main character-assassin, was holding things back and when I, the author, was holding things back. The reason I wrote it in first person was so that you'd get only Varis's viewpoint, so supposedly every sentence and every word in the book is what Varis wanted you to know, not me. But I can totally see someone claiming that I held things back when in fact I don't think I did. Not as the writer anyway. And I agree with the review--Varis isn't trusting (for good reason) and doesn't allow herself to open up in the book (for good reason . . . although not quite as good by the end of the book).
I also am thankful thattryslora felt that the "style" of the writing was Varis's voice and not a choice on my part. First person again forced the book to be Varis's book in all ways, so the style was forced as well. (PS--My other books don't sound like this one at all, style-wise. Ask Larry West on OWW. He's seen 3 different novels from me--or parts of--and he's said they were all in different styles, and that the style suited the character/book itself. I can't say this was a conscious thing on my part really though.) I'm glad you picked up on the scents and their use/purpose!
Anyway, I thought that if anyone has read the book and would like to post a review here, feel free! It's an open invitation. I'm thinking of adding people's reviews to my website at some point, both good and bad, but that requires . . . time. We'll see.
And I think that the second book will satisfy some of your hopes/requests,tryslora. Perhaps not all (I have to save something for book 3!), but the whole trust issue is called into question and resolved to some extent. No word from the editor on book 2 though. I don't expect anything for months. The trials of the publishing industry.

I have to admit, I'm curious about the book set in the 60s that you were talking about. That one really intrigued me. I hope you can get that one sold. *nods emphatically* *grins*
