As I mentioned in my post here, a local writing group is running a conference on writing in general, all genres. Here's some additional information for those that may have looked it up and winced at the price of registration. Essentially, if you're feeling straped for cash, they have a few scholarships they are offering:

Dear Author:

The Southern Tier Authors of Romance (STAR) have set up a limited discretionary Scholarship Fund for writers who have financial constraints, but would like to attend STAR's "Start Your Engines… Rev Up Your Writing Career" conference to be held September 12, 2009 at the Treadway Inn, Owego, New York. The Scholarship would provide funding of fifty percent off the original registration fee of $80.00 (your cost would be $40.00). However, this reduction in registration cost does not allow the registrant to participate in the First Pages Workshop and the pitch session with Rhonda Penders, Editor-in-Chief of The Wild Rose Press. It does include continental coffee (during registration), attendance at speaker sessions, lunch, and the bookfair.

This scholarship will be offered to a limited number of registrants AND for a limited time only. If you are interested in applying for the funding, please fill out the following information and send it by e-mail to STAR's Vice President for Programming Wendy Wood, at wmwood@stny.rr.com no later than September 4, 2009:

Bother, that's a bit far for me. I don't suppose you know of anything like this in NYC proper?

I did an online workshop for them a couple of years ago. Good group.

If any writers (or wannabe writers) are within commuting distance of this upcoming conference, I'd say, "GO!" If for no other reason, writers conferences are great for simply being able to associate with other writers. It's a way to commune with those who have similar goals as well as similar trepidations.

I attended a similar conference last spring, hosted by IECRWA (Inland Empire Chapter of Romance Writers of America), here in Spokane. Like the STAR conference it was open to writers of all genres. Probably the biggest draw back to a smaller conference such as these is a limited range of interests in any attending agents and editors. Even the agent from right here in Spokane does not handle what I write. But then again, I've found that even the major conferences do not always have an across the board representation of genres/categories in the attending agents and editors.
