Revisions Day 3 (Yesterday)
Jan. 3rd, 2006 08:42 amI'm posting this a day late since I couldn't get access to the web yesterday. At least not after I'd finished working.
Anyway, got another 3 chapters revised, which was actually 5 chapters, because I had to go back and mess with some things in earlier chapters. I spend the weekend celebrating--because it was New Years--but also thinking about a few small nagging things and decided in the end I needed to change them. So I started by fixing those earlier things, then plowed into the new chapters. These chapters were harder to revise because the revisions were more complex. So I probably spent a few more hours on these 3 than any of the previous chapters because of that. I had to define explicitly some of the magical rules for my universe, which required that I know EXACTLY what was said and done in The Skewed Throne, so there were lots of checking of extremely minor details from the first book. Things like "Did anyone actually touch her skin in this scene?" and stuff like that. Since I'm also expanding the worldview more in this book, I also had to check the placement of cities I'd referred to in the first book, what products I'd said they produced, etc.
In fact, I've discovered that this is the most annoying thing about writing a sequel. In the first book, I could do whatever I wanted because no one knew anything different. However, in book 2 you want new stuff . . . but you have to make certain, absolutely certain, that it matches what has already been said and (hopefully) read in book 1. Because you just KNOW someone is going to point out any continuity errors like that. I don't think I have any at this point. But who knows.
I'll continue the revisions today, but will probably only get one chapter done. I've got to prepare for my signing tomorrow up in Albany at Flights of Fantasy tomorrow, January 4th, at 7pm. So if you're in the area and have a spare moment, stop on by!

(Notice the page count has increased. I added about 4 pages with yesterday's revisions/changes.)
