Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] tyger_raven, the winner in the Cracked Throne Viral Contest! And soon to be the proud (I hope) owner of a signed ARC of The Cracked Throne. *roar of applause, screams and whistles*

Thanks to everyone who entered the contest. If you'd like, you can still enter the contest running at Clarkesworld Books, where another signed ARC is up for the running, plus many other prizes. Here are the details for that:

Preorder The Cracked Throne or The Skewed Throne at Clarkesworldbooks.com between now and October 31st and for each order you’ll be entered into a contest where you could win one of the following prizes:

Grand Prize: A signed ARC (advanced reader’s copy) of the novel The Cracked Throne, five copies of The Skewed Throne so you can infect your friends, and a pen shaped like a dagger.

First Prize: A signed hardcover edition of the novel The Cracked Throne and a pen shaped like a dagger.

Second Prize: A signed hardcover edition of the novel The Skewed Throne.

Third Prize: A signed paperback edition of the novel The Skewed Throne.

Order multiple copies and be entered into the contest once for each copy ordered! See the complete official rules at Clarkesworldbooks.com.

While checking that out, make certain you look into the new Clarkesworld Magazine. The first two stories are up. This is a new market for SF and F short stories, so if you're a writer, submit! And support the magazine by ordering the chapbooks or buy the anthology when it comes out. In the meantime, enjoy the stories and artwork.

Thank you for pointing out the Clarkesworld Magzine stories are up. I just read Sarah's story. Just lovely.

And I would love to submit there, but the word count is too low for me. I don't have any short stories under 4k and the ones I have can't be cut that much and still work. This market is not for me, alas.

I wonder why there's wordcount stated. Must be because they're going to put them into print eventually, and that involves some restrictions on length. I'll have to ask Neil.

Definitely keep them in mind if you do someday write something that fits the magazine. I know Neil and I'm hoping that this is a success for him and everyone involved.

There are two reasons I can think of just off the top of my head, both of which are guesses on my part.

1. Money. They are paying more than any other market right now at ten cents a word. I'm guessing that they have a set budget per issue and have to stick to it.

2. There is a perception out there that the majority of people will not read stories online that are longer than 4k. I always find this kind of amusing, being a five year veteran of OWW and having read entire novels on the computer screen for friends without it being an issue. But there are die hard believers out there that the attention span and comfort level for readers drops off at 4k.

Those are my guesses. Either way, I'm still shut out of the market.

Mind if I ask how many entries you got?

So he's part of your group, huh? He's probably wishing I hadn't announced he won on LJ then. *grin* But now you can read book 2 before its release as well!

Yeah, we met doing NaNoWriMo last year and then he and I started a crit group that now has 4 (seems a good size).
