Another Day of Writing
Jun. 14th, 2006 03:41 pmSo today went much smoother on the writing. Can't say I got much more actually DONE, but it didn't feel like I was pulling teeth either. In fact, it seems like my writing time before lunch goes much faster than after lunch. I can't figure out if it's an actual "time of day" thing, or if it's just that in the morning I usually have a scene I'm trying to finish, while in the afternoon I'm typically starting a new scene and trying to get to the middle of it. Starting scenes is always worse than finishing them. It's the syndrome of the entire book that I've discussed before (flailing about for the plot) but at a micro level.
But today, after lunch, I had some fun at Varis's expense. In general, Varis is a very serious character. She's all about survival, being practical and getting the job done, whatever the job may be. She likes to be active and gets frustrated when there's nothing to do but wait. You don't see her smiling much.
She's not smiling much in the scene I wrote this afternoon either, but everyone else is. As I've said before, I'm trying to push Varis into new territory in this book, more political territory, and this was the first instance of that. I had fun anyway.
And the scene that I wrote yesterday that I thought sucked . . . didn't. Or at least reading it through today I decided that it had merit. I fixed a few things, figured out a few more things (like what I'm going to use Borund for in this book), and ended up setting up the scene that's going to close the chapter. I'll have to write that scene tomorrow, although I might not get it done. There's some emotional things I need to work out (this has turned out to be a very emotional chapter for Varis) that have repercussions throughout the rest of the book--a significant subplot--so it may take more to write than I think. I definitely don't want to screw it up.
Then of course there's chapter 3 to think about. Although if I end this chapter as I'd like, I should be able to start chapter 3 right away. I'll have the beginning, just not an end. Or a middle for that matter. But it WILL start the heavy-duty, serious, major-arching plot for the novel. (All of the stuff so far has been repercussions from the end of book 2, reminders of what happened in book 2, and beginnings of subplots that will affect the major plot but are also interesting in and of themselves.)
But at least today I had fun writing. I'm in a much better mood. Word-o-Meter coming up next!
The Vacant Throne
Here's an interesting little sentence that popped into my head while driving (not used in any of my books of course): "It was as frustrating as a sarcastic person speaking to a group of literal thinkers."
Came to me totally at random. No, seriously.
Writers are strange (but fun) people.
