I spent most of today thinking about the revision suggestions and about how to implement them. In general, I revise by working through the novel front to back and I don't think this book will be an exception. I've come up with a general plan on how many chapters need to be revised per weekend in order to get them done on time . . . which means I'll be busy. I figure I'll need to get 3 chapters revised per weekend. But since my weekend include Fridays, that amounts to one chapter per day per weekend. I can also probably squeeze in some work during the weeknights as well.
Today, I typed up scene and character descriptions for my editor regarding the scene for the cover art. She's going to take a look at that, then send it off to the artist, Steve Stone (the same artist that did the cover art for The Skewed Throne). I think, if he's suitably inspired, that the cover concept will blow the cover to The Skewed Throne out of the water, but we'll see. It seems incredibl cool in my head, but I've discovered that the artist usually takes his own spin on things, generally for the better.
I also emailed my agent to update her on the new release date and the current status of the revisions.
The next step in the revision process for me is to type up my own thoughts about all the suggestions, throwing out possible ideas for fixing them or covering them. Most of the ideas will stick when I actually sit down to revise, but some of them won't. I'll probably do that tonight, rather than read. This is the brainstorming part of the process, but it helps me organize my thoughts and the scattered notes I made while talking to my editor on the phone. I also put the changes in chronological order (for the most part) during this process so that I can check things off as I fix them later.
And that's the status of the revision process so far. Tomorrow I'll probably work on developing the history of the world a little more concretely in a file similar to the revisions notes file I described above. Most of this won't end up in the novel, but I need to set some details in stone so that I don't contradict myself later on. More of a timeline than anything else.
And lastly, it appears that they want to hire me again for the day job. So I might actually have money next year! Nothing formal like a contract yet, but it's been pushed up the ladder. I'm so relieved. I didn't realize that this was weighing on my mind so much.
So far, this week rocks!
