I found another review while googling myself. This one comes from Henry L Lazarus, who says:

"Joshua Palmatier's first novel has a neat heroine. We meet Varis on her way to assassinate the mad Queen of Amenkor sitting on The Skewed Throne (hard from DAW). Then Then Mr. Palmatier pulls back to show how the orphan, raised homeless in the worst slums in the city, learned her trade. Varis has the ability to look at the world a bit differently, dropping into the shadows in a way that allows her to speed her movements and see hostility as shades of red. I really love the way the talent is described, as though it was normal to the Varis, and yet self-taught. The talent may have come from a magical fire that swept through the city (without burning anything) when she was twelve. An accidental meeting with one of the queen's assassins leads to her training, and her dislike of the murder of innocents leads her to the main city where it too is falling apart. I'm looking eagerly for the second book in the trilogy."

A very positive review I think. He does say that he would never have bought the book cold based on the cover, but it sounds like he thought the story inside was good. I'm happy.

Congratulations, by the way. I love seeing new authors break in, and your story (linked by pbray) of manuscript oopsiness with DAW made me chuckle. I still haven't sent a single manuscript or pitch to any publishers or agents, so what do I know?

Good on ya, mate, and I think I'm going to go out and buy your book on this next paycheck. It sounds interesting!

Hope you like it. If you'd like a signed copy, check out Clarkesworld Books (http://www.clarkesworldbooks.com). They have signed copies offered at a discount from the cover price.

And if you'd like advice before sending stuff out into the wilds, feel free to ask questions here or at my email: jpalmatier@sff.net.

Let me know what you think of the book if nothing else.
