I found another review while googling myself. This one comes from Henry L Lazarus, who says:
"Joshua Palmatier's first novel has a neat heroine. We meet Varis on her way to assassinate the mad Queen of Amenkor sitting on The Skewed Throne (hard from DAW). Then Then Mr. Palmatier pulls back to show how the orphan, raised homeless in the worst slums in the city, learned her trade. Varis has the ability to look at the world a bit differently, dropping into the shadows in a way that allows her to speed her movements and see hostility as shades of red. I really love the way the talent is described, as though it was normal to the Varis, and yet self-taught. The talent may have come from a magical fire that swept through the city (without burning anything) when she was twelve. An accidental meeting with one of the queen's assassins leads to her training, and her dislike of the murder of innocents leads her to the main city where it too is falling apart. I'm looking eagerly for the second book in the trilogy."
A very positive review I think. He does say that he would never have bought the book cold based on the cover, but it sounds like he thought the story inside was good. I'm happy.
