I was thinking along the same lines this morning, about re-rewriting the scenes I've been working on the past few days. I'm at a similar point in my novel.
I sympathize greatly. There's such a fine balance between "resting" and "charging in," and also in deciding whether to allow the characters to succeed by failing (in a way) or to allow them some success. I want them to be active in their pursuit of their goal, but part of the theme of the book is how frustration also serves a purpose.
