Revisions, revisions, revisions.
Jun. 26th, 2008 09:01 pmToday, I revised more of Well of Sorrows. Alot. But in the end . . . I only got one chapter finished. It was 40 pages long (and is now 38 pages long) but it required that I eliminate one character and he showed up more often than I thought he did. I also decided where two characters were separated didn't work, so had to completely restructure the middle part of the chapter so that the two characters didn't get separated. Inserting a character is also hard. (And I had to. Their separation just rang as completely fake, or like the author had reached into the story and forced them apart. Unnatural. It's much better with them together.)
This chapter was also the high point and gets me to the "middle" of the book, where everything changes. It also marks the point where the parts I'm more or less happy with in the book are done . . . which means I'm entering the land of CRAP! I've already scanned the next chapter and have decided the middle part sucks (author intervention, info dumping, pretty much everything you can do badly is done there), so tomorrow I'll be ripping the entire chapter apart. Literally. I think I'll start in the same spot, but with a completely different direction for the character. I'll be keeping alot of the scenes, but they'll have a completely different tone and emotional feel, and most will be in a different order. In fact, I'm going to rip part of the the next chapter out and put it in here as well. And guess what? I think I'll still be cutting words.
This is where the real revisions set in. I expect slower progress on the chapters from here on out. But I also expect more words to get dumped.
