Revisions: Chapter 7
Jun. 24th, 2008 04:13 pmSo I only managed to revise chapter 7 today. I'd hoped to do 2 chapters at least, but once I got started with chapter 7 I realized that I needed to trash the entire second half of the chapter and write new scenes from scratch. This of course takes longer. I ended up salvaging the last few pages of the part I trashed (although I'm still not sure it works as well as it should), but it ended up sucking up the majority of the day.
Why did I need new scenes? Well, there's this rivalry between two characters that spans the book. In chapter 4, that rivalry hits a high point, and settles into a lull after that. I'd intended originally for the rivalry to begin to escalate again until another high point in chapter 10, but in the first draft that never happened. I was focused too much on the rest of the plot and how it was going to play out.
In any case, I've decided that the rivalry need that escalation, so during the revision process, I'm trying to figure out ways to fit that in to the already existing plot . . . and still cut words. Or at least, not expand the book. I managed to do that today. I ripped out that half, inserted the new scene to escalate the rivalry, and then brought it back to the main plot by the end, without increasing the word count.
I had to cut something to do that of course. I decided that a particular character and what he teaches the main character was unnecessary for this book, and so that character has been cut and that lesson will, if needed, have to be shifted to a later book.
I took a quick look at chapter 8--a skim really--and have already cut one page based on that. Hopefully I'll get that finished tomorrow.
