Author Introduction: S.L. Farrell
Feb. 5th, 2008 12:09 pmHere's the next installment in my new "Author Introduction" series, where I invite an author I know or like to introduce themselves to my LJ readers. Some you may have heard of before, and some . . . probably not. Today's author has been around for a while in various places . . . but I'll let him explain that. Everyone, say hi to S.L. Farrell! And check out his books, including his new one, when you're done!
"Thanks to Joshua for allowing me to hijack his blog for a bit. I promise I'll clean up after I leave, and those burn marks in the carpet were there when I got here. Honest...
I'm Stephen Leigh, or sometimes I'm S.L. Farrell. In either case, I'm always "Steve." I live over at
sleigh and if you're not familiar with the place, you're all welcome to drop over there as well and look around, or hit my website for what might be Too Much Information. And if you want to meet me in the flesh, I'll be the GoH at Applecon in Minneapolis (April 11 - 13, 2008); if you show up, you'll understand why I make a living as a writer and teacher, not as a musician...
Like many writers, I also have a 'real' job: I teach Creative Writing at Northern Kentucky University -- a job I enjoy immensely, by the way. I also play music (I'm lead vocals and bass -- yes, I know, an odd combination -- but I can also play guitar a bit), I study the martial art aikido (I'm a Sandan in the art, or third degree black belt), I love reading about history and fascinating characters. I'm married, with two kids -- that takes up a bit of time there, too. And we won't even talk about e-mail and web-surfing. Someone really needs to invent the thirty-hour day.
And, oh yeah. I write. Stories and books. My most recent piece of short fiction is in INSIDE STRAIGHT [Hardcover: Amazon
, Mysterious Galaxy] the new Wild Cards novel edited by George RR Martin, and out from Tor Books last month. The Wild Cards series has been running for some time, but this is a new 'revival' of the series and INSIDE STRAIGHT is very much a book that even those who haven't read the previous 17 (yes, seventeen...) Wild Cards volumes can pick up and enjoy. No backstory necessary.

And hey, my newest book is just out. Excuse me while I go into huckster mode for a moment. The new baby in the family is A MAGIC OF TWILIGHT [Hardcover: Amazon
, Mysterious Galaxy] in hardcover from DAW Books, who also published my previous CLOUDMAGES series (and hey, who also published this guy named Joshua Palmatier, who has written a couple excellent books himself).

A MAGIC OF TWILIGHT is a departure for me. The Cloudmages trilogy was Celtic fantasy; the Nessantico Cycle (as I'm calling this one at the moment) is still fantasy, but it focuses more on a time more similar to our Renaissance, that strange and wonderful interface where magic meets science, where the world turns slowly from being largely unknown to known (but still strange and weird). The book's also a departure structurally, with several different viewpoint characters taking their turn at the helm to guide the reader through the story. So far, the reviews have been very encouraging -- I especially liked the review Charlene Brusso gave it for Black Gate: ""Readers familiar with Farrell's amazing 'Cloudmages' series will pick up this first book in a new series with a pretty good idea of what to expect; all others are likely to be happily blown away by the gorgeously detailed setting and intriguing characters...." she said, and went on to say other very nice things as well. I don't know Charlene, but I wanted to give her a hug for that review.
In any case, I hope people take a look at the book, find they're interested, and enjoy the read. If you do, please let me know! And if nothing else, stop by the blog and make a comment or three -- it's always nice to meet new people, who often enough turn out to be new friends as well. Joshua, thanks for the chance to say "Hi!" to your readers -- I'll return the keys to the place to you now, and oh, you're out of beer in the fridge..."
