Revisions Day 2--Plus a REVIEW!!!
Dec. 30th, 2005 07:42 pmWell, day 2 is finished. I managed to get the next 3 chapters done. The beginnings of some of the serious changes have started. I've introed a character earlier on in the book, so will need to steadily work his presence in over the next few chapters until I feel he's been completely integrated. He existed in the first draft, but at the end I felt that I needed to expand his presence, get him in earlier to help clarify some of the magical elements in the novel, and to generally help make the plot a little more . . . exciting. I hope. To raise the stakes mainly. Everything else has been minor so far.
And now the review! The review appeared in Locus's January edition and while it isn't exactly stellar, buy this book immediately or you'll die, it finishes off very well, with a quote I can use for publicity purposes. I haven't seen the actual Locus, but a friend sent it along to me, as well as an ad placed in Locus by DAW advertising their January releases. I'm in the lead, top of the page, with a quote saying something along the lines of "the brilliant debut of Joshua Palmatier". Or something like that. It all makes me tremble. I've hit the phase where nerves have totally set in and I'm almost wishing (but not really) that this never happened. Will the book sell? Will my name be reviled by publishers everywhere, a disaster story to end all publishing disaster stories? Will everyone hate me?
Oh well, I've got thick skin.
The review:
A young gutter kid turns out to have special abilities that help her survive—and make her an excellent assassin in a city-kingdom in turmoil because of the madness of the Mistress of the City. Much of the novel follows young Varis’s training as a killer, while alternating segments make it pretty clear young Varis will be asked to kill the Mistress herself. Certain aspects of the plot are predictable and cliché; it’s no surprise that Varis has a great destiny ahead of her, but watching her survive and rise from the slums makes for compelling reading in this highly promising first novel.
And the progress-o-meter:
The Cracked Throne
