First the random thought, thunk while driving to school today: Why are there no Lego versions of any of the Star Trek ships? I mean, if they put out the Enterprise (in all its versions), the shuttles and runabouts, the Defiant, Voyager, etc as Legos . . . I'd end up buying all of them. So why hasn't someone done this? WHY????

I demand my geekness be sated!

In other news, I received word that SUNY--College at Oneonta has decided to hire me for another two years. So I'm in the money for another two years at least. By then, I'd better be a bestselling author with gigabucks and hordes of fans so I don't have to worry about whether they'll hire me for another three years after that. *grin*

I used to make all of the Star Trek ships out of Legos when I was a kid (of course, no Defiant, Voyager, etc. back then). The lack of large round pieces made it so I had a rather blocky fleet.

Congrats on the job news!

I imagine unless you make them rather large that they would be blocky in appearance. I should try to make them on my own with my own abundant Legos.

Thanks!

Now you made me want these.

Good! If enough people want them, then maybe someone will cave and we'll get them. *grin*

The short answer for the Legos question probably has something to do with licensing. I'm betting you can do a google search and find plans, though...

Yay for the new contract!

From: [identity profile] jpsorrow.livejournal.com
I'm sure it's a licensing problem. I may have to just make them myself . . . with all that spare time I have and everything. *grin*

Thanks!

I used to have quite a stock of Legos, especially their Space Legos line, back when they had Starfleet Voyager and Galactic Destroyer (I think those were their names), before this line became too specialized.

I lost count of how many ships I built over the years, including designing my own Star Destroyer. I still have my own ship design that has managed to stay built for over two decades. At the moment it is in two pieces as it is still waiting to be unpacked (from a recent move back up north) but will soon grace my bookshelf once more.

I could probably make the ships myself with my own Lego collection, but that always requires time. Oh well. Maybe this Christmas or Thanksgiving, during the break. I have a TON of the Star Wars Legos.

Um . . . I don't currently have an agent. Probably an issue with the lack of gigabucks at the moment.

But thanks for the congrats on the contract extension!

Go, go Gigabucks! Glad to hear you won't be living in an alley and panhandling for typing paper.

"Hey buddy, can y'spare a page?"

Panhandling for paper. I can see that in my post apocalyptic future.

This two year/three year contract thing - is that a ramp up to tenure, or do they have the long-term-contract thing instead of tenure?

Date: 2008-10-22 07:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jpsorrow.livejournal.com
It is a ramp up for tenure, so here's hoping I can get a decent amount of "research" credits accumulated in the next 5 years or so.

Date: 2008-10-22 08:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rosinavs.livejournal.com
What counts as "research credits" for you? At my school, research in math history or education count as much as pure math, and professional conference presentations count, although not as much as journal articles or books.

1. It's my impression that today's Lego-age children do not know or care about Star Trek. Possibly excepted are those whose parents encouraged/forced them to watch it.

2. Congrats on the rehire! Glad to hear that you have a couple more years' cushion en route to stardom.

Well, they'd be catering to the older crowd. You know, the ones with money.

Thanks for the congrats!

A fair point, raising an interesting question. Is it possible to order custom-built Lego sets? Apparently it is (http://shop.lego.com/Product/Factory/Default.aspx?cn=364). Which raises a further questions--why do they not have small-set versions of Legos involving licensed figures. Can you imagine the Buffy set? The Marvel or DC set? The Happy Days/Laverne & Shirley crossover set? I think our blocky friends are missing a bet.

From: [identity profile] jpsorrow.livejournal.com
There's someone at Norwescon who has these small-set versions of Legos involving licensed figures. I bought a bunch while there. Most are ones that Lego has out in larger sets, but they've used the Legos you can order to create their own sets as well, already built. Although I can't say they had any of the ones you suggested. This was an SF con after all . . . a few of the Marvel and DC characters showed up, but not Buffy or Happy Days, etc.

Congrats on the contract and good luck with the gigabucks writing gig.

As for Star Trek Legos(tm) - Paramount is fanatic about their trademark and will sue if they even find fan art at a convention, so I would surmise that Lego corp couldn't get a license (or weren't willing to pay what Paramount wanted).

Date: 2008-10-22 07:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jpsorrow.livejournal.com
I figure it's an issue on Paramount's side of things. They are rather . . . protective.

Yay for contract renewal!

There's a toy store here that sells open-stock Lego pieces. Given the time and budget, I'm sure you could get whatever you needed to build yourself a whole Starfleet ;)

From: [identity profile] jpsorrow.livejournal.com
I have quite a few Legos of my own. I could probably make it myself already, but there's that little thing I have little of: time. *shrug* Besides, I want instant gratification.

On the legos... probably something to do with rights... but man, what a killer market it would be if Lego can ever by the rights to do it!

On the mega gigabucks... according to pbray you are the only hardcover on the sci/fi fantasy shelf in a new local book store! I'd say that's a step.

Lastly, congrats on the contract! tide over money till you ARE famous is always a good thing ;)

From: [identity profile] jpsorrow.livejournal.com
I'm sure it's a rights issue. I do have the urge to make the starships myself now though. . . .

Thanks for the congrats! Tide-over money is always good.

We'll see what happens with the hardcovers books at the local bookstore. I not holding my breath though.
