As you say, it's definitely worth workshopping that second paragraph with everyone you can rope into it a few friends and acquaintances -- especially ones that haven't read the book yet, because s/he-who-hasn't-read-the-book is exactly the audience you're writing for; that step seems to have been one of the things that helped me get my query letter from all rejections, all the time, to some rejections and some requests for partials.
