So today, my geekdom and my hobby of going to flea markets collided in a way I never expected.

You see, typically every Sunday morning (when not at a con or whatever) me and my partner my partner and I go to the local flea market, and sometimes after that an auction or antique show. Today we went to the flea market and bought standard things like flowers and vegetables for the roof garden (today's veggies were acorn squash, more cucumbers, and . . . an eggplant). We did the usual run-through of the outdoor stalls and I was just wandering past a table that looked like it had nothing of interest when my eye caught this:

That's right. Barbi Barbie and Ken. Dressed up as Star Trek characters. With tricorders and communicators and even a phaser.

I. Almost. Died.

Laughing at first, but then I became strangely attracted to the dolls. They began to call to me. I assumed that the price would be horrendous, but it wasn't. I found myself reaching for my wallet. . . .

And now I have Star Trek Barbi Barbie and Ken dolls. I'm not sure why. I don't collect Star Trek memorabilia (just the books) and certainly don't collect Barbi Barbie dolls. I collect crackle glass. And books.

I'm not sure how collectible the item is and will likely go searching on Ebay to see if they've shown up there. Not that I'm thinking of selling it or anything (unless it's really rare or worth a ton more than I paid for it). The box got a little crushed on the bottom (not sure if you can see that in the pic) but it's obvious the dolls have not been removed from the box or played with in any way. Any idea on its worth from all of you Star Trek Barbi Barbie geeks out there?

I love the packaging. Kirk is totally eying Ken.

You bought these? Hmm...
Actually, the Kirk Ken reminds me of someone and I can't work out who. And it isn't Kirk.

My God, yes. It's Gore. No wonder Kirk is looking so admiringly at him.

Gore as Kirk? Nah. Back in 2000, Tommy Lee Jones campaigned for Gore. How come? They were roommates in Harvard. Jones mentionned that they both studied real hard, but there was one hour every week that was sacred to them and they'd both put their tomes aside. To watch Star Trek. And they'd play-act Kirk and Spock. I seriously doubt that Jones pretende he was Spock.

Yes, there is something Osmondish about him, isn't there? But I think [livejournal.com profile] wishwords is right. It's Gore.

Doh! I hadn't until you pointed it out.

She's Sooooo gonna get the kiss of death from Kirk. Then, Kirk can put the moves on Mr. Ken.

That's really wonderful! I just this morning was reading an article in Bitch magazine about women in Trek fandom (http://bitchmagazine.org/article/fan-tastic-voyage) and that underlines everything they said.

"...me and my partner my partner and I..."

::kicks professional author in the seat of his pants::

I will not comment on you persistently misspelling "Barbie" despite having the correct spelling right there in the photo.

[grammar nazi OFF]

All that said: those figures are awesome! Add me to the chorus being amused by Kirk's sight-line. Where are you going to display the box?

A quick google finds the set going between $45 and $85 online. Yours has a damaged box so that brings the price down a little. I hope you didn't pay more than $40!

Grammar fixed. And what did YOU edit? Hmmm?????

And I certainly did not pay $40 for it. The price she wanted is actually visible in the pic. I though it was reasonable.

As we're doing grammar'n'stuff - memorabilia, for preference...

OMG that is great. I don't collect Barbies either, but I will admit to owning four different spell casting and witch Barbies because I couldn't resist. And I would so have bought that one too.

Got to love Starbie and Ken.

I've got a set sitting on top of the bookshelf for my six year old daughter. She's already a comic/superhero geek. I am vindicated!

Kirk absolutely is eyeing Ken, and poor Spock is so sad ...

I remember when the original Star Trek series came out and was always (and still am) a fan. My sister was into Barbies for years and had an extensive collection at the time of her passing. However, I doubt if hers would have been worth as much as some, because with most she unboxed and sometimes changed clothes on before displaying about the house. But I guess it depends on whether one collects such items as an investment or simply to have them. As it has been with me and older cars, while I like to have them fixed up and looking nice, I also want to be able to drive and use them. I've got a lot more respect for the classic car owner who drives to a car show a hundred miles away than I do for the guy who trailers it to the sight and drives it off the trailer to the display area, and that's it. Perhaps my sister was the same way with regards to her Barbies. I'm sure the satisfaction of having them was much more important than any monetary worth later on.

Pff. I would've totally bought that. And I only collect dragons and specific toy memorobilia which appeals to me personally.

And I don't really like the original Star Trek. But that's way too geeky to pass up!

That price is a steal for B&K in the same box marked collectible. I'm Sooooooo jealous.

I'm an iffy fan, watched Trek for many years and got tired of it. The only Barbie's I collect are Halloween or pagan goddesses (Evening Star, Morning Sun, and Mystic Moon). Finding any of these for less than $20 after initial release is nigh impossible.

You got a bargain and a half!

So, what's crackle glass?

Date: 2008-06-05 12:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jpsorrow.livejournal.com
Crackle glass is colored glass (vases and pitchers and bowls and other shapes) that is hand blown and, while the glass is still warm, it is immersed in water for a short time, which causes the glass to fracture but not actually break apart. The end result is glass with tiny cracks all through it but that's still intact. I'll try to get a picture of a few and post them, since people might be interested.

I have Morticia/Barbie and Gomez/Ken dolls :)

Just a couple words on doll collecting... and I know you aren't going to go all crazy with this, but... having the dolls in their original box, obviously never played with does add something to their value, HOWEVER - what can take away from the value is if the bands that hold the dolls in place in the box start to discolor the dolls skin. This can even happen through the clothing. I always remove the doll from the box, remove the bands and return it back to the box if I'm going to store them.

Congrats on your bargain purchase! Woowoo!

Now, if you happen to see the 18 inch tall Peter Criss from KISS doll in good condition......

Have you ever been to the Madison-Bouckville antique show in mid-August? You'd love it! Lots of antique toys and look who I met there last year.
