Oops!

So, if you haven't heard, it's kind of any icy, freezing rain, sleet, all-around-crappy kind of weather day today. The local police have asked that no one travel. Anywhere. If at all possible. So while getting ready to head to campus today, I kept calling the Inclement Weather Hotline on campus. I called at 9am, just before I had to leave, and I heard, the "college campus is closed today". So I emailed my class and said that since classes were canceled, our quiz would be on Monday instead.

Apparently, what was on the hotline was actually, the "college camp is closed today".

Oops! I guess my classes are canceled today, since I already sent the email, but everyone else had class. Unless the individual professor canceled on their own. It was an honest mistake on my part (I mean really, they need to be clearer when they leave messages on the phone line), but it still makes me feel like I'm an irresponsible person. I'm not sure I could have made it in to work anyway, since it takes me an hour to get to campus from home on a GOOD day, so with the roads bad, even with the truck . . . iffy. Everything around Oneonta canceled (Binghamton University, Cortland) and the state offices closed . . . but somehow they felt Oneonta should hold classes.

Oh well. I need to let the "irresponsible" feeling go, since I can't change anything now, and just take the free day to write like a maniac and get tons of words done.

I really should. *gnaws lower lip*

My sister spent a year at Oneonta. Is it true that during blizzards sometimes they string ropes between the buildings so you won't get lost?

That's funny! I would blame the messenger. College camp? What the heck? Of course you would hear that as "campus." And making people drive in weather against a travel advisory? That's irresponsible. But then, where I live an inch of snow has everyone in a tizzy.

Here (central Virginia, US) it's raining (not icy). Glad to see rain; we need it badly. And it is perfect writing weather.

This morning on the P&SB website they were reporting that traffic on I-88 had slowed to 20mph with numerous cars off the road. So even if you'd tried to get there, it would have been an ugly drive.

It's bizarre that they didn't cancel, I mean BU closed, I thought that the world would end ;) since they NEVER close.

Don't feel guilty. That "mistake" saved you from some horrible driving conditions I am sure.

I teach an hour away too and I am sure glad I didn't have a class today!

I'm 100% certain that writing like a maniac on your newest novel will assuage every bit of that guilt.

Don't feel bad about it at all. If you had 20 students, I bet you just saved one accident, maybe a bad one. On my way around town last night (5" of fresh slippery snow) I saw 2 accidents and 3 cars stuck on the side of the road from slipping off. Your weather sounded even worse than this. So don't feel bad. Just take advantage of the free time and enjoy the weekend.

I'm up in 1000 Islands. It is madness out. There was a 20 car pileup on the 81 a couple of days ago. Between the ice and the snow and the freezing rain, today is not a day to be out. Staying home is a good thing. ;)

(What is a "college camp", anyway?)

I think you made the right choice. Hope you ate chocolate while you wrote.
