Ok, I've spent the last three days revising the first draft of book 3, The Vacant Throne. So far I've managed to get through chapter 5. I also read through chapter 6 today and fix up what's already there, but in one spot I noticed something lacking. I've decided I need to add in an additional scene that helps resolve one of the problems/story lines I felt need some more emphasis after I reached the end fo the book. The scene I'm planning fits surprisingly well into the section--almost as if I'd planned to put it there months and months ago. As I was reading today, it really did feel like a gaping hole had been left to be filled. Perhaps it was my subconscious working overtime or perhaps backwards through time.

Or perhaps it was garden gnomes.

But in any case, I'm making more progress than I expected. Oh, and remember that little thing I mentioned, where during the rewrite I'd have to find some things to cut out so I could get my word count closer to 100,000 words, rather than the 120,000 I currently have? Ha, ha. Well, so far I've managed to add 10 more pages to the manuscript. I have actually cut scenes here and there, significant cuts, not just a sentence here and there but whole paragraphs, whole pages! But it's not helping. *sigh* I'm hoping something comes up in the last 10 chapters.

So, goal for self: Tomorrow I need to add the scene I mentioned above to chapter 6 and revise chapter 7. Friday, chapters 8 and 9. Next week, chapters 10-16, plus the epilogue. That's 2 chapters per day, more or less. Since I've done 2 chapters per day this week with time to spare (like today), I might actually get this sucker done on time.

Revision of The Vacant Throne

PS--This will go up because of that extra scene I decided to add but couldn't get to today.

Wierd Research moment: Olive trees. Yes, I had to research olive trees to make certain one of my scenes wasn't totally bogus.

Just curious--is it your publisher that wants it at 100k or your own goal?

(it's Heather btw ... I turned back to the LJ darkside)

The 100000 goal is what's stated in my contract, signed awhile ago. The Cracked Throne also had a 100000 word count in the contract, although I went over that a little.

However, I'm going that more than a little with Vacant Throne. Worse case scenario is my editor says I need to cut something to get the word count back down.
