Writely Musings

I managed to write more today. Not as much as I'd hoped, but it turns out that the scene I got up to yesterday and thought I'd crank out quickly today was longer than I expected . . . and involved much emotion-handling, which always takes me forever to write.
I really had two scene today. I figured the first would be easy because I pretty much ended yesterday's writing on the very cusp of the new scene (almost one of those famous "end in the middle of a sentence" things) so that it would be easy to slide back into the writer-space and crank out some words. This did happen . . . however I suddenly realized that Varis was having some serious emotional issues in this scene. I expected her to be angry (when is Varis not angry?) and that would be that, but instead this whole "I'm connecting to this other character" thing began to evolve and it felt really right and so I went with it. I think it's a very powerful scene. At least, I think the writing in it rocks. Alot of cool sensory detail (I'm back to smells) with strong connections to Skewed Throne. I really like this new character I introduced. I think there will be some really good interactions between her and Varis. Sort of a new role for Varis as well.
And can I just say that language differences between people suck? I have two languages now, and somehow I have to get people to communicate, but do it believably, and it just sucks. *sigh*
The second scene I wrote today isn't as good . . . or at least doesn't feel as powerful. Some good character stuff going on, Varis again dealing with her emotions regarding another character, but just not as solid. Maybe I'd burned up my writing ability by the time I got there. In any case, it transitioned nicely and set up (mid-sentence more or less) the scene I expect to write tomorrow. It still feels like I'm setting up things though. There are just so many little plot threads from book 2 that I need to get started in new directions, lots of characters I need Varis to check up on, and I haven't settled into all of them yet. I'm trying though. Hopefully by the end of this chapter I'll have had Varis "check in" with everyone, or at least mention everyone, and all of the significant plot lines for book 3 will be started.
Oh wait, I forgot Marielle. . . . But that should be easy to fix.
Here's the Official Word Count so far:

Sounds good
Date: 2006-06-14 06:37 am (UTC)My own writing's chugging along, I finished a battle scene that wrapped up chapter sixteen (of nineteen) that was really fighting back, and now I'm into chapter seventeen, which seems to be flowing well. I've got an eye test early tomorrow so I'll try to get some writing in at a coffee-shop beforehand while I can still see. Gotta hate those eye drops.
Good luck with your progress, and yes, language differences do suck. A lot, and not in a good way either.

Date: 2006-06-14 05:48 pm (UTC)Congrats on your writing. I know that today's session is going much better than yesterday's. At least so far. Still got a few hours to write yet.
Good luck with the eye appointment.
