It's been at least three or four years since I bought book 1 of League, and as I read it, I remember I didn't like it. I'd seen the movie before I read the first volume, and yes, I liked the movie.
What I didn't like about the book was the weird sexism and fetishism going on, and how Mina risks letting herself get raped just to induce Quartermain to join the team. I have little recollection of her "leading" the team, although I know she did here and there.
I wasn't clear on whether or not Mina *was* a vamp, because it wasn't addressed directly, and she never behaves as if she were a vamp.
Anyhow, at the time I was disappointed and turned off enough in the first volume to not pick up the second volume.
