Weekend Shenanigans
Aug. 24th, 2009 09:13 amSo, this past weekend I traveled up to Troy, NY, in order to attend the wedding of one Jennifer Dunne. You may remember that Jennifer was one of the original infamous band of three writers (along with me and Patricia Bray) here in Binghamton. I met both of them through my work at the local bookstore while I was in grad school. We started meeting to critique each others writing, but that degenerated into drinking and playing board games like Ticket To Ride and such.
Then she met Jonathon and moved to Denver, abandoning us for "true love." *snort*
But apparently things were still good after a few months of "true love" because this past Saturday they actually tied the knot.
In any case, I drove up to Troy and found the hotel where Patricia and I would be staying that night. I dressed in slacks and one of my 50s shirts (this is as "dressed" as I get for events; I'd have gone in shorts and a t-shirt if my partner would have let me) and met up with another friend, Tom, and we drove to the church. There, we witnessed the event. Jennifer was matter of fact about it all and also deeply in love. Jonathon had some problems, nearly breaking down completely and taking a moment before each line of the "repeat after me" section to collect himself. But eventually it was over and the happy couple and wedding party immediately abandoned the guests and were whisked away behind closed doors. I didn't notice because I was still in shock over seeing Patricia in a dress. (Pictures coming soon.) So, Tom and I got into the car and headed toward the reception. BUT! BUT!!! We needed alcohol for later that night, after the reception. So we stopped and got liquor. He got some kind of scotch and I got vodka (Skyy and some kind of chocolate vodka). We hit the reception and immediately after pulling into the parking lot it started POURING rain. POURING.
But that didn't matter because we had alcohol from the bar in hand. We snacked. We drank. We witnessed the arrival of Patricia in a dress! (Pictures coming soon.) And the happy couple. We moved into the ballroom for the actual reception, which was spectacular. The food was good, the dancing was . . . well, I didn't dance. Aside from some kids, I was probably the youngest person there. We were drowning in a sea of blue hair. But our table was lovely and naughty (we destroyed the decorations eventually) and fun and the evening went rather fast. I had chicken. Patricia and Tom had filet mignon. We all had lots to drink.
And then the reception was over. We ended up back at the hotel and the SERIOUS drinking began. Lots of talking and chatting and vodka and scotch. Patricia loved her filet mignon so much that she revisited it repeatedly during the night. But other than that it was a lovely event. We survived and everyone has made it back to Binghamton in one piece. I haven't been that drunk in a while. Considering that classes begin on Wednesday this week, I think I deserved it.
