End of the World: Let's Call It Research
Feb. 9th, 2009 08:28 amOK, so I love "end of the world" kind of stories, along the lines of Stephen King's "The Stand" (pathogen causes the end of the world) and S.M. Stirling's "Dies the Fire" (unknown force causes failure of science . . . I've only read the first book), things like that. So of course I'm interested in whether or not I'd survive such an event (the assumption being I would, like everyone else) and then the constant wondering what I'd do after the fact, in the strange new world that would arise.
So I thought I'd throw this out to everyone out there. If the end of the world came in some form or another, whatever, what are your thoughts? Do you think you'd survive given where you are living right now? Would people in the country fare better than those in the city? How do you think the populace as a whole would react/respond to such an event? Do you think we'd all band together to survive or would we go feral and every-man-for-himself?
But let's not just stick to generalities here. Let's get specific. Assume you did survive. How did you survive? Hunker down and wait, or did you run like hell for someplace? Where? What would you do first? Would you try to find family members, perhaps a state or two away, assuming communications were cut? What would you do? Hunker down and build a fortress where possible? What would you gather to keep yourself alive? What would be a necessity? Food first? Water? Guns? How would you defend yourself? Or do you think you'd try to find someone else to band with so that they'd do the leading/thinking for you? Would you be a leader or a follower? What do you think you'd discover you'd need more of as time passed? Medicine? Supplies for planting so you could raise your own food later on? Or do you think you'd just go mental and breakdown?
I'm not looking for short answers here, so feel free to use be long in the comments. And I'm looking for this to be a (mostly) serious/realistic post. How would you react to such a situation, physically, emotionally, practically, etc.? Would you survive in the long run? Why or why not?
