I rate the book signing last night as a complete success. I exceeded my goal of selling 10 books . . . and sold 12. But I did not need the extra books I brought just in case the bookstore ran out of books. That hasn't happened to me yet at any of my signings. But I'm not complaining because none of the signings have been bad so far. I haven't had the dreaded "no one shows up except friends" signing. Last night, about half of the people that showed up were people I didn't know, just random sci-fi fans who were interested in the book. In fact, the bookstore owner said someone had bought the book the day before and didn't know about the signing. They were walking by and saw the book in the window, came in, and bought it. That kind of story just makes me feel good.
I also had a former student show up and buy 2 copies, plus a bunch of people from the math department in Lock Haven showed up and bought copies (some of the them multiple copies, like 2 or 3). Thanks for the support guys! (I don't think any of them read my LJ though. . . .) Also, the Dean of the college of arts and sciences showed up, just for support. I think this is good because I want him to hire me for the tenure-track position next year. Hopefully this places my name firmly into his brain, so he won't hesitate to say yes if my name comes up.
Also, after the signing, played lots and lots of games of Ticket To Ride online with
jennifer_dunne. I was hot! Out of 4 games played exclusively with her, I won 3. We also joined a 4-person game against some strangers, and Jennifer came in second, losing by only 2 points. I was about 20 points behind the leaders. (But I don't think I was last.) I played another game (USA version; all these others were the European version) after that and came in second by only a few points as well. Just didn't have good cards. But it was a fun night of gaming.
Now to get serious about the other career. Got to write some quizzes today. And tomorrow . . . the grading for the new semester begins. *sigh*
