Oh, oh, oh, characterization is a must. I can't read books without some good characterization, because otherwise I just don't care what happens to the characters involved. In this post, I was just talking about physical descriptions. So, I agree: characterization is essential, but the looks and such . . . those aren't as important overall. Which is why I don't tend to have just blatant character description paragraphs in my novels. (I don't think I have them anyway.)
