I took a look at the cover, and while I can guess the effect the artist was going for, the execution makes me think of animated clumps of clay with the appeal of just started mud pies.

I agree with you on the cover art for this, especially with regards to the face. Something about it just isn't quite right. I'm not sure what effect the artist was going for there.
