Gaming and Getting Busy!
Played a really cool game last night called Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, I lost, but since it was the first time I'd played I'm OK with that. I didn't really have a strategy, I was just attempting to learn the rules and play around with the (many) different aspects of the game. I think I'll need to play it a few more times before I can settle on a strategy that might work. The main problem with my game last night was that I forgot that to win you needed the victory points. I was too focused on producing goods and keeping them, then on cashing things in for the points. Oh well. But NEXT time . . .
Goal today is to finish off Chapter 3 of my thesis. If I manage to keep myself on campus after lunch, that shouldn't be a problem. However it's Friday and it's bitterly cold (yet again) and I'm feeling a strong urge to just go home and curl up under an afghan on the couch. At least until I teach my cycling class. I'll attempt to become more motivated as the day progresses. Got a slow start today.
Since others seem to be posting this stuff, I thought I'd give it a try:
Reading: "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" I'm over halfway through it now, but I expect to be reading this for a while yet. Also "Thief of Time" by Terry Pratchett.
Writing: This damn thesis. Should be finished with the first draft in another 2 weeks.
Arithmatic: Again, the damn thesis. Plus teaching Linear Algebra. We're almost to echelon forms!!! In another week we'll be solving systems of linear equations. Yay!!

Strategy

Re: Strategy
But the point was just to play a game so you'd understand the rules. (Having played it through, you see why there was no way I could explain all the rules ahead of time -- your brains would've exploded)
The tiles that let you auto-staff your buildings and plantations are excellent. As is the one that lets you get extra plantations, especially at the beginning, especially in conjunction with the construction hut, which lets you pick a quarry instead of a plantation.
A lot of the game play is because there are only 2 of each building, so you can't necessarily GET the one you want.
But it was fun, right? Enough to do it again? Next week? Huh? Huh? Huh?
Re: Strategy
Also, is Chris Moriarty interested in anything like this? Could she be a 4th person to play? Not now of course, with all the snow, but . . .
