I've done a very limited bit of historical fantasy, and you're right. It's much harder when you don't want to get tripped up by those historical details. It's also sometimes a little creepy when details you didn't know when you started writing dovetail perfectly with your plot. You almost start to wonder if you *are* inventing the story. Have you run into any of those moments with the Onyx court series?
