Oh man, I actually started reading this last month so when I saw what this post was about, INSTANTLY INTERESTED. I'm not very far yet though, about ten chapters in or so.
I have to agree about the titles. They are dreadfully confusing and most of the time I just skim over them. I would not be the least bit surprised if you told me Sherwood Smith was a linguistics major. The detail put into the conlang elements is uncanny. It would be fascinating, if I wasn't busy trying to concentrate on the characters' interpersonal relationships instead - which are excellently done and much more fascinating than the linguistics.
