Believe me, if someone works hard and does well, it will shine through in all endeavors. The problem is that as colleges and universities play these games, they devalue the degrees they confer on their students. Nowadays, an employer can't look at a resume and say, "Wow, you got a degree in XXX and YYY U. You must be good; come work for us!" They have to probe deeper to find out how much the person really knows and what critical thinking skills they have.
It's the Lake Woebegon Effect, where everybody is above average. The people who just sort of coasted through college, relying upon their parents or the administration to fight their battles for them do get their comeuppance during the interview process. I've seen it happen numerous times myself.
