Very true. So my recommendation, before looking for an agent, is to 1) write in a really hot sub-genre and 2) have a book sold to a major house. Seriously, though, I would LOVE to post my query that got me my agent the first time around, before I was sold, but I don't have one. A friend of mine just sent my work over to her agent, who became my agent. So queries are just one of a number of things that can get you in the door with an agent. In my opinion, luck plays almost as big a part in it as great writing does. Good luck!
