I think knowing the current mythos of particular regions with the underlying value and perspective positions that birth that mythos certainly helps creating new fantastic myths. Even studying the structure of fairy tales has been helpful with my own stories if I keep with a retelling of old tales, riffing on the stories, or creating new ones out of whole cloth.
