In Which I Get My Geek On

For those keeping track (all 0 of you), I managed to finally get back to writing the novel today after 2 weeks of day job hell. Not as deep in day job hell as [livejournal.com profile] pbray at the moment, but it was pretty bad. I think I've settled into the new routine and hope to continue the writing at a steady pace again from now on.

But anyway! What about the geekdom?!?! Well . . . in a fit of uncontrolled geekiness, I ordered a bunch of DVDs during a sale. Some of these I've owned before, but lost in the flood of 2006 (and the subsequent theft of most of what survived). Some I saw and just went "OMG, I remember that! It rocked! I must have that!" so here is my list, with an occasional comment. I expect certain people to re-evaluate how geeky they consider me based on this list:

"Labyrinth"--OMG! I love the logic puzzle with the two doors. And it's mazes!!
"The Dark Crystal"--Jim Henson and fantasy. Nuff said.
"Men in Black"--Just SF fun, what can I say.
"Willow"--I realize that some of your opinion of me may drop on this one, but it was STILL fun and I have to have it.
"Time Bandits"--I don't know what to say. The end is weird, but the story . . .
"The Ice Pirates"--I cannot tell you how much I laughed at this campy movie. OMG. I haven't seen this in ages and can't wait for it to arrive.
"The Beastmaster"--Also campy, and not necessarily in the funny way (not intentionally funny) but there are scenes of this that I STILL remember, so had to get it. Also, there are ferrets.
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind"--I need say nothing about this, I hope.

The only other movie that I'd like to get but can't seem to find is "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen", which I also laughed hard enough to hurt myself on while watching. I'm sure there are other movies out there I'm missing (and there's a bunch that I already own, like "Dragonslayer" and such). But I think this is plenty of evidence of my geekiness for everyone.

Discuss.

Willow, Time Bandits, The Ice Pirates and The Beastmaster....four of my favorite guilty pleasures ever! If you had Krull on that list I'd probably SQUEE for you!

OMG, I am *such* a geek too! :D Labyrinth and Willow are two of my favorite movies (in fact, a friend sent me a link for the MP3 of the Willow theme!) I used to love The Dark Crystal (although I watched it with my kids and somehow realized the magic faded as I got bigger). Men in Black is awesome, and Close Encounters? Now that's classic!

I am disappointed not to see The Princess Bride or The Neverending Story on there, though. ;)

Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies ever. I stand in awe of Terry Jones's ability to accurately capture the mindset of a fifteen-year-old girl (which is what I was when the picture came out).

As for Willow, well, Val Kilmer is a tremendous draw, there. He and the brownies have many funny lines.

And admit it: you're watching Beastmaster for half-dressed, fully-buff Marc Singer. Well, that's why I watch it.

"Rats, beeeg rats!"
"Ah Louis, you and that stupid rat dream."

Which is to say, I'm with you on Willow.

Have you checked out the Storyteller series by Jim Henson? Ooooo, so much fun there!

Labyrinth? David Bowie all decked out as Jared the Goblin Prince? Falling for the heroine? *le sigh* I have the soundtrack too, "As the World Falls Down" is just an amazing song.
As for the rest : all of the above! I watched Beastmaster just for the ferrets...only non-animated movie I've seen where the animals got the best lines!

I adored Baron Munchausen, and I too have been looking for it on DVD. My husband has never seen it! *gasp*

But where is Princes Bride???

[identity profile] wedschilde.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
what? no buckaroo banzai?

[identity profile] mmegaera.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad someone else mentioned Krull.

Assuming that The Princess Bride goes without saying?

How could you think Willow would make people lose respect for you? I own that one on VHS! (c:

"Don't call me peck!"
"Peck. Peck. Peckpeckpeckpeckpeck PECK!"

Actually, out of the eight movies you listed, I have five, so . . . yeah. Most of those movies are from my childhood, so I love them unconditionally.

Netflix offers Baron Munchausan and the opportunity to buy it. :D

Except for the Ice Pirates and the Beastmaster movies (niether of which I have seen) you listed off my top fav movies. :)

Instead of games, one of these Fridays we can watch bad Sci-Fi. For starters, I KNOW everyone needs to see Rutger Hauer in Split Second :-)

[identity profile] brownkitty.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
No Mel Brooks? No Tim Burton claymation?

Your list is a good start. But just a start ;)

[identity profile] stillnotbored.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I love Willow! Out of this list the only one I haven't seen is The Beastmaster.

You need a few more on this list. Hook for one, LadyHawke for another, Princess Bride for sure. Oh! Then there is Flight of the Navigator, Explorers and The Last Star Fighter. For total camp, Earth Girls are Easy!

That should get you going down the road to true geekhood. *g*

[identity profile] tcastleb.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I adore Munchausen. LOVE that movie. Taped it off TV a few years back. The only other one on your list I actually own is Dark Crystal, though I certainly wouldn't mind having the others. And, yeah, where's LadyHawke?

[identity profile] lessa-lynn.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Considering how much of a closet geet I am, there's no way I could fault you for owning three of my all time faves! Labyrinth and Dark Crystal are totally awesome!

[identity profile] therinth.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Beastmaster is such my guilty pleasure.

And then there's that other supercheesy one...Hawk the Slayer...?

"You're not in charge here, Shorty. I am!"

[identity profile] mnfaure.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Don't let anyone knock Willow!!!

[identity profile] shannachie.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that was certainly a good selection.

[identity profile] sarramaks.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Can I mock you for your 0 words? :)
I assume your presence will be returning to novel_in_90?
I remember going to watch Labyrinth when I was small and having to leave the cinema because it scared me.
*goes back to writing year 7 reports*

[identity profile] libwitch.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I do own the the first four myself so....

I did watch The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and spent it going "what?"

[identity profile] sodyera.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
And I thought I was exhibiting obscure internal humour by filling in the empty space in the box of my STAR WARS boxed set with a copy of SPACEBALLS.

[identity profile] scbutler.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow AND Ice Pirates? I'm extremely jealous.

[identity profile] ramblin-phyl.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
My compliments on the entire list. I found Baron Munchausen boring but the rest are spot on.

[identity profile] footlingagain.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee - good list :D

And any film with ferrets is gooooood.....

Sorry about the day job hell - but do we see you back at Ni90 now?
