I'd like to highlight the very first release from Zombies Need Brains today, the anthology CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE: STEAMPUNK VS ALIENS, edited by Patricia Bray and myself. This was our third outing as editors, but it was a particular fun and harrowing ride, because it was our first attempt to fund an anthology using a Kickstarter and then produce the anthology ourselves. There was a steep learning curve for me as a "virgin" publisher. While I knew in some sense how publishing worked (having published multiple books through DAW by then), it was still a walk through the dark with a pen-light. This anthology was the result. Here's a description of the theme (although that's kind of obvious in the subtitle) and the Table of Contents. Plus a link to the paperback if you're so inclined. Again, you can get this at Zombies Need Brains' online store as well, among other things.
When aliens reach Earth, they encounter the clockwork mechanisms and Victorian sensibilities of a full-blown steampunk civilization. Inspired by the classic science fiction adventure tales of the nineteenth century, leading fantasy and science fiction authors bring us tales of first contact with a twist, as steam power meets laser cannons...and dirigibles face off against flying saucers.
Clockwork Universe contains fourteen stories from some of the genre's top authors, including: Ian Tregillis, Leah Cutter, Bradley P. Beaulieu, J.R. Hargenrader, Gini Koch, Jason Palmatier, C.B. Pratt, Jean Marie Ward, Tansy Rayner Roberts, Gail Z. Martin & Larry N. Martin, David J. Fortier, Brad Hafford, S.C. Butler, and Seanan McGuire.
"The Cavorite Job" by Ian Tregillis
"Gracie's Fire" by Leah Cutter
"Quinta Essentia" by Bradley P. Beaulieu
"When Comrade Ekaterina Died for the Motherland" by J.R. Hargenrader
"A Clockwork Alien" by Gini Koch
"Heart of the Empire" by Jason Palmatier
"The Red Queen and the White" by Cynthia Pratt

I'd like to announce that my new small press called Zombies Need Brains LLC will be celebrating it's launch at Balticon 2014 this coming May 23-26th, 2014, at the Hunt Valley Inn in Maryland. I'll be there the entire weekend, with panels both on Friday and Monday (my schedule will be announced soon), but the official Zombies Need Brains party will be Friday, May 23rd, 2014, from 9-11pm in Parlor 1026. We will be celebrating the creation of Zombies Need Brains LLC and the upcoming release of its first anthology, CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE: STEAMPUNK vs ALIENS (July 2014). There will be free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, and ZNB merchandise (t-shirts, tote bags, and baseball caps) will be for sale. You can also preorder CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE from the press at the event. In addition, Gail Z. Martin, Jean Marie Ward, and Jason Palmatier--all contributing authors to CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE--will be there.

So mark your calendar and plan on attending Balticon on Friday, May 23rd! And if you can't make the party, keep watch for CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE this July from all of your usual book resources, both physical copies and ebooks.

I'm proud to announce the official Table of Contents for the Clockwork Universe: Steampunk vs. Aliens anthology, the inaugural release from the new small press Zombies Need Brains! We have a great line-up of authors, including long-standing familiar favorites and a few new names you should watch for in the future. We're hard at work designing the interior of the book, finalizing the cover, and arranging everything with the printer and distributor. We expect to be releasing the book no later than July 1st (with high hopes we can get it out before that). So keep watch here as the timeline develops!

In the meantime, you can check out cool Zombies Need Brains merchandise (t-shirt, baseball caps, totes, art prints, etc) at the new online store, even preorder the anthology if you'd like, if you missed out on backing the kickstarter. It will also be available for ordering on Amazon and Barnes & Noble once published. (Note: Black t-shirts are being printed right now! Watch for those additions in the next few weeks.)

So, without further ado, here's the current version of the cover (subject to change) and the Table of Contents! Enjoy.

Hey, all! So, I decided that I wasn't busy enough doing the day job teaching thing and writing my own novels and short stories . . . so I started a new small press. It's called Zombies Need Brains LLC and it's goal is going to be to publish anthology projects, initially funded by Kickstarters. (This is not self-publishing, I'm going to produce books by other authors. DAW is still publishing my own books.) Here's the cool logo for the press:

Our first anthology project is called CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE: STEAMPUNK vs. ALIENS and it will be edited by Patricia Bray and myself. We already have a great list of participating authors, including Scott Lynch, Seanan McGuire, Gini Koch, Caitlin Kittredge, Bradley Beaulieu, Ian Tregillis, and Gail Z. Martin. And that's only HALF of the anthology! I think this is going to be a great project . . . if we can get it off the ground. To do that, we're running a Kickstarter. You can find the entire details of the project through this link. I'll give you a summary of the anthology concept here though:

Clockwork Universe: Steampunk vs. Aliens: When aliens reach Earth, they encounter the clockwork mechanisms and Victorian sensibilities of a full-blown steampunk civilization. Inspired by the classic science fiction adventure tales of the nineteenth century, leading fantasy and science fiction authors will bring us tales of first contact with a twist, as steam power meets laser cannons . . . and dirigibles face off against flying saucers.

We've also already contracted for the art we'll use to create the cover of the anthology, which I think rocks. It's called "Steampunk Octopus" by Alex Broeckel:

If that doesn't draw your attention, I don't know what will. *grin*

In any case, if you'd could help me spread the word about the Kickstarter project, I'd greatly appreciate it! And if you can help fund it--because it's a cool idea for an anthology and because we've got some great authors already--I'll thank you in advance. Spread the word! I'd love it if this little dream of mine got off the ground.
